Baltimore Celebrations

  • Celebrating the return of Ehrlich, because Maryland hasn't been ridiculous enough lately. And you know that by the time Ehrlich concedes, Steele will be fired and back here in Maryland. To bring sexy back. No worries. Plenty of posh hotels and strip clubs here, after all.
  • Celebrating the start of zoo season. Even though I haven't had a chance to go yet. Things beyond my control.
  • Celebrating missed opportunities. Saw the "Pick us, Google" press conference on the teevee. Mayor says, "Time to move from the previous decade's 'The Wire' to this decade's Broadband." Seriously? The pun practically writes itself here! How did you miss "Time to move from the previous decade's 'The Wire' to this decade's Wireless."??? Do I have to do everything around here???
  • Celebrating the survival of my species. A baby girl was born. Thank you, St. Joseph doctors and nurses. Apart from one of the head nurses. The one with the crazy eyes. You can go fuck yourself, you Nurse Ratched wannabe.

Oh boy, I have several things to comment about this time. Hey, this might be like a legitimate comment for a change!

First of all, I don't know if this will be properly observed in Baltimore, but my wife and I are both excited about David Simon's "Treme" finally debuting on April 11. We are worried that using many of the same actors from "The Wire" will ruin it for us, however. For we are both solidly locked on to Bunk being Bunk--regardless of what kind of character he is now playing, and it is pretty much the same for the others.

Secondly, our fair city of Springfield, MO is actively lobbying Google to pick us as one of the test sights for their new incredibly fast broadband service, which both excites and infuriates me. For unless I am woefully misinformed, almost everyone in the country should already have availability to such a service because AT&T was given vast tax credits back in the 80's to string fiber-optic cable far and wide for this very purpose, but they just keep the money without doing much of anything.

Lastly, I hear what you are saying about that one particular nurse. Be thankful that there was apparently only one. For when my oldest daughter was born, my first wife and I had to contend with several who were evidently in competition with each other over who could be the cruelest. Put it this way, one screamed (yes, actually screamed) at my wife (who was all of 19 at the time) that she could forget about checking out of the hospital until she had a bowel movement, and I was so proud of her (my wife) when she literally splattered two of the walls in the bathroom when the dam finally did break loose. My wife was horrified, but it was all I could do to keep from standing up and cheering.

By the way, congratulations on the birth of your daughter. Um, she'll be more like her mother than you--right?

I know what you mean about using the same actors. I had the same problem when I started watching The Wire, because many of the police officers were crack addicts on The Corner. But you get used to them if they're good actors, you know?

And thankfully it was just the one nurse. When something like that happens, you're not in a position to start a fight, because the last thing your wife wants is to think the people who take care of her are angry at her. So we said nothing. Until her doctor came and asked how everything was going...

And thank you! (I hope the girl is more like her brother than like any of her parents.)
