My two Cents are a bit boring, I'm afraid.
The Baltimore Sun is saying, "There is no corruption so small that it is unimportant." They're right. Supporters call the trial a witch hunt. They have a point too.
The Sun also says, "The mayor's supporters are bound to play down the seriousness of the jury's decision." But is there really any way to play this down? This trial had been about something so trivial it can't be lowered by wishful thinking and wishful spinning.
People can play down Cheney's no-bid contracts, they can play down Mark Foley's text messages, and they can play down Jack Abramoff's golfing trips, but no one can play down a bunch of gift cards. It is what it is.
So The Sun is right. The Sun is right even though politics is a corrupt business where, even though sometimes citizens get a break, mostly it's just a game of one hand washing another. The Sun is right even though what goes on in Washington and in every election from the President to local representatives involves shady deals and legalized bribery.
The Baltimore Sun is right, unfortunately.

That's really right all over the world, I believe.
Great post.
It's sad when no one will stand up for themselves and take responsibility for their actions. Instead they have to sell their souls in back room dealings to get only a fraction of what they want.
